Have You Registered Misspellings of Your Domain Name?

In a blog I read by Janine Popick on verticalresponse.com, she talks about the importance of registering the misspellings of your web site domain. Even if you have print materials with your web site clearly listed, you still need to remember that there are people out there who may have heard your company name but are taking a guess at your web address. Why not register those misspellings and redirect visitors to your homepage? This way, you avoid losing visitors or potential customers.

I can think of two distinct examples that I came across recently with our own clients. We were planning a holiday event for The Aesthetic Center at Affinity, and even though we printed the web site (aestheticcenter.affinity-health.com) in large bold letters on multiple ads, billboards and fliers, we still set up several redirects to account for misspellings of the site domain. No matter whether you typed in aestheticenter.affinity-health.com, aestheticscenter.affinity-health.com or aesthetics.affinity-health.com, you could find the Aesthetic Center site and learn about the event.

Another example is a web site we created for Centers for Pain Management. The main site is registered at managepaintoday.com; however, in a effort to redirect visitors who may try to shorten the business name, we added another domain at centersforpain.com.

If you have a web site domain that has the potential to be misspelled, especially if it has double letters where the last letter of the first word and first letter of the next word are the same (aestheticcenter for example), then try to think of other potential spellings of your address and register those alternate domains as redirects.
